Planning permission has just been granted for this new home by the Thames in Cookham. Green Planes is a replacement house at the foot of Winters Hill at the start of the Chiltern Hills in Cookham Dean, it is in ‘Wind in the Willows’ territory beside the Thames.
The volumes of the house are covered by three sloping planes of sedum producing a low soft roof line, which avoids the view lines of its neighbours and springs naturally from the ground. Larch cladding, naturally rendered walls and minimalist glazing are also used.
On the edge of the Flood Zone 3, Flood Risk advice was followed, so the house is located carefully and of resilient design.
The composition of the volumes of the house produce a low soft roof line rising naturally from the ground, oriented towards the long views over the river and away from its neighbours. The three volumes of accommodation are covered by separate sloping planes of sedum roofs which span from 900mm above ground level up to 7m.
A materials palette comprises sloping green roofs, larch cladding and naturally rendered walls and minimalist glazing proposed floor level.
One enters at the ground floor where there is an open plan kitchen, dining and living spaces. This area will be lit from north west and north east facing windows and large sliding doors looking towards the river and surrounding landscape. A study space and a ground floor bedroom and en suite ensure that the house provides lifetime living accommodation.
A cantilevered terrace wraps around the garden side of the house and links the pool at a lower level, and there is a shorter balcony across the upper floor bedrooms which have panoramic views of the River Thames and surrounding rural area without overlooking the neighbour’s property.
There is a basement beneath the house and forecourt will provide recreational space for a home gym, games room, home cinema and bar, with the service facilities of utility rooms, changing rooms and swimming pool plant.
